The Art of Mia Mäkilä

Halloween is the ultimate excuse to indulge in all things horror. Paradoxically, for someone who can no longer feast on horror films, the gut wrenching vivid nightmares that inevitably ensue have seen these days (and nights) go into premature retirement, I simply cannot get enough of horror art. Maybe the silence of these captivating and haunting images are more amenable to my subconscious mind? Whatever the reason, the simple fact is, I bloody love gothic, macabre and horror art – in abundance.

One of my favourite artists is the self-taught, horror artist, Mia Mäkilä.

“Picture Pippi Longstocking and swedish movie director, Ingmar Bergman, having a love child. That’s me.” Mia Mäkilä

Inspired by movies and film directors such as David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock, Roy Andersson, Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton. Mia describes her work as “horror pop surrealism”. Working in mixed media, Mia’s unique style tackles difficult emotions; fear, madness even sorrow. Despite this, her work possesses a dark, underlying humour which is pure magic.

The paintings are my personal favourites: Witch and The Madness, Grim Reaper (Daisy Adair), Daddy’s Secret, The Devil, Katla and Evil (as featured above, from left to right) but please do check out her other stuff, equally as haunting and mesmerisingly enchanting.
