The Godfather of Punk’s Funeral
A-list celebs, punks and goths alike united in Central London on April 22nd, 2010 to pay their respects to Malcolm McLaren, dubbed “The Godfather of Punk”. The funeral procession ebbed its way through Camden Town to the deconsecrated One Marylebone Church.
A gothic horse-drawn carriage beheld his graffitied coffin, featuring the trademark slogan, “Too Fast To Live, Too Young To Die”. Zombie punks travelled behind in a green double decker bus displaying a bright pink banner with bold custom graphics, “Malcolm Was Here 1946 – 2010″. Somehow a befitting tribute that his funeral be branded, even after death, Malcolm is still managing to make punk about business. Anarchic, flamboyant and undeniably (annoyingly) intoxicating.
Whilst the custom “memorial” logo may be a bit over the top but I’d be lying if I said this would not my dream funeral. Friends, family, please take note! What’s the betting the “Malcolm Was Here” logo features on certain couture accessories next season? Ironic yet likely.
Malcolm’s family issued this statement shortly before his funeral:
“In celebration of Malcolm’s life we are asking people to observe a minute of mayhem at midday on 22nd April. Put on your favourite records and let it RIP!”
Dame Vivienne Westwood, Joe Corre (Malcolm and Queen Viv’s son, he of Agent Provocateur acclaim), Sir Bob Geldof, Pam Hogg, Adam Ant, Tracy Emin and Bobby Gillespie were amongst those in attendance to celebrate his life.
