Malcolm McLaren (22 January 1946 – 8 April 2010)
Perhaps indulgently credited with creating (okay… let’s get some perspective – being sassy enough to brand, wrap and flog it more like!) the Punk Movement. There’s pretty much not a single punk on the planet Malcolm McLaren did not cross paths with – at some point!
Former lover and business partner of the Queen of Punk, Vivienne Westwood, buddy and famed “punk” artist, Jamie Reid, not to mention managing some of the world’s most iconic bands, the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols and Bow Wow Wow.
Irrespective of my view of the man, I’m totes with John Lydon on my dislike of the man, it cannot be ignored that what Malcolm did was pretty darn influential, shaping British art, fashion and music history. And for that, I duly pay my respects. Somehow disliking him seems ironic and yet apt.
RIP Malcolm McLaren.
